Introduction

What is your professional role?
I’m a CPA who works with small businesses in DC, many in the service industry.
What inspired you to join the Board of the Empty Bottle Fund?
I’ve seen many of my service business clients struggle to find the best way to give back to the community. I think the Empty Bottle Fund could provide a blueprint for more philanthropy in our city.
How does the mission of the Empty Bottle Fund align with your personal values?
There’s so much value in having long term, sustainable fundraisers. While one-off giving can be rewarding, providing a regular source of funding for our community partners can be invaluable in their planning and execution of their missions.
What was your first experience with the Sundress Festival?
On the advice of a friend, I attended my first Sundress a few weeks after moving to DC in 2011. I don’t think I’ve missed one since!
II. Impact and Contributions
What do you see as the biggest impact the Empty Bottle Fund has on the communities it serves?
Obviously, the financial donation is key. But beyond that, I think there is value in the community aspect of reminding everyone that we’re all in this together. We’re all neighbors who look out for one another.
How do you use your professional background to help manage resources and maximize donations?
As a non-profit, it’s important that we stay in compliance with local and federal tax regulations. I’m happy to provide my expertise here to ensure we can continue our work of giving back.
As a member of the Board, what are you most proud of?
To see Sundress grow and be more successful every year!
The Empty Bottle Fund works closely with the DC service and hospitality industry. Why do you think this community is so central to the spirit of Washington, DC?
In my work with service industry businesses, I’ve realized that these are the businesses who really have their finger on the pulse of the community. They know what’s going on. Your local bar or restaurant is such a part of your life that your DC experience wouldn’t be the same without it!
You have a long-standing relationship with DC Central Kitchen. What does their work mean to you personally?
There’s no need more basic than food. Ensuring that everyone in our community has something to eat is the least we can do. DC Central Kitchen also treats everyone with dignity, which is lacking in our world today. Being in need is not shameful and no one ever knows when they might fall on hard times.
III. Just for Fun
The Wonderland Ballroom or Dew Drop Inn: What is your go-to order?
A combo – Miller Lite and a shot of Jameson!
What is your favorite “hidden gem” in DC?
Murray & Paul’s in Brookland – an inexpensive, no-frills, delicious breakfast. It hits the spot after a night at the bar!
VI. Vision and Future
What is a specific goal you have for the Empty Bottle Fund over the next 12 months or beyond?
I’d like to see us add additional events, each targeted at a specific community organization.
Final Word: “If someone is looking to get involved with the Empty Bottle Fund but doesn’t know where to start, what’s your best advice?”
